  • Who can file IRS form 2290?

    Any business owner or a tax professional can file form 2290.You may be an individual, limited liability company (LLC), corporation, partnership, or any other type of organization (including nonprofit, charitable, educational, etc.)

  • What evidence of payments can we present to Division of motor vehicles (DMV), to show that we have filed form 2290 with the IRS?

    Proof of payment that a carrier can present to DMV may be either a copy of the electronic receipt of Schedule 1 showing the dated e-file watermark, or a copy of the IRS form 2290 with a copy of the electronic IRS payment confirmation screen.

    Evidence for exemption can be a copy of a IRS Form 2290, Schedule 1, Part II for suspended vehicles such as vehicles over 55,000 pounds but traveling less than 5,000 miles, an agricultural vehicle traveling less than 7,500 miles or for vehicles that are qualified as blood collector vehicles.

  • How can I verify that IRS has stamped my schedule 1?

    When you e file your form 2290, The IRS will send your accepted schedule 1 by applying a digital watermark along with e-file logo on it. The schedule 1 is your valid proof of payment from the IRS.

  • What are taxable vehicles?

    Taxable vehicles are vehicles that carry a gross weight of 55000 pounds or more. A highway motor vehicle includes any vehicle designed to carry a load over public highways. Examples of vehicles that are designed to carry a load over public highways include trucks, truck tractors, and buses.

  • What is a suspended vehicle?

    A vehicle will be suspended from paying tax liability on form 2290 when it weighs 55000 pounds and above and is estimated to run on public highways with a distance of less than 5000 miles and 7500 miles in case of agricultural vehicles.

  • If I have purchased a second hand truck, do I need to file form 2290 or the previous owner had handled that?

    Purchase of a second hand truck does not transfer the truck taxes from one owner to another. You will have to file separately form 2290 and pay taxes on taxable vehicle.

  • What is a logging vehicle?

    A vehicle qualifies as a logging vehicle if:

    • It is used exclusively for the transportation of products harvested from the forested site, or it exclusively transports the products harvested from the forested site to and from locations on a forested site (public highways may be used between the forested site locations).
    • It is registered as a highway motor vehicle used exclusively in the transportation of harvested forest products. A vehicle will be considered to be registered under the laws of a state as a highway motor vehicle used exclusively in the transportation of harvested forest products if the vehicle is so registered under a state statute. In addition, no special tag or license plate identifying a vehicle as being used in the transportation of harvested forest products is required.

  • What is an agricultural vehicle?

    An agricultural vehicle is any highway motor vehicle that is:

    • Used (or expected to be used) primarily for farming purposes, and
    • Registered (under state laws) as a highway motor vehicle used for farming purposes for the entire period. A special tag or license plate identifying the vehicle as used for farming is not required for it to be considered an agricultural vehicle.

  • What if my VIN is less than 17 characters?

    If your VIN is less than 17 characters, just enter your VIN and complete the rest of the 17 characters by entering capital X. For example, your VIN is 5476SD4. Then during filing 2290, you are supposed to write your VIN as 5476SD4XXXXXXXXXX.

 

The current period begins on July 1, 2014 and ends on June 30, 2015. Form 2290 should be filed for the month when the taxable vehicle is first used on the highway. The filing rules apply whether you are paying the tax or reporting suspension of the tax.
